Exploring the Morbihan in Brittany

Tim and I have been travelling in Brittany (or Bretagne) for a few days, staying with one of my cousins in a little village called Landévant. We’ve been going on little excursions each day. Our first day here, we went to see the cathedral in St. Anne d’Auray before spending a day in Vannes, the city where my grandparents used to live. The cathedral in St. Anne d’Auray is one of the holiest places in Brittany—Pope Jean Paul II came here—and is much more ornate than the one in Vannes. Here’s a side by side comparison:

The medieval center in Vannes is so colorful, and I love how crooked the buildings are. These two were almost touching!

Love the dichotomy between the newer architecture (and the roof!) and the old!

We took a ferry to Belle Ile yesterday. Le Palais, one of the port towns there, is super colorful.

After some hiking through the forest and the Vauban fortress, we happened upon a quiet, secluded little beach, and decided to spend the day there.

So even though there aren’t many folks walking around town, this is a pretty cool place. My brother and I managed to eat three lovely meals all while sitting outside on terraces (at three different places). And I found more great color everywhere we went…

I’m in Richmond with my brother for the weekend. Scenic, nice town, lots of history, but not many people. It’s a little wierd… Still, great for picture-taking: interesting texture and colors, and there is so much space. Coming from farther up north, it seems unusual to have so much of it between structures.

bamboo chopsticks

This is an attempt at a blog post. Internet at the guide house in Tuscany has been pretty bad. It is a miracle that I was even able to upload a photo!
So I got a portable set of bamboo silverware and chopsticks since my trusty spork broke while on the road in July… I was happy to have the chance to use it at the Philly airport before even leaving for my trip!

This early Kodak film test is the oldest color film I have seen.

I love how self aware the actresses are—they don’t seem to be used to being in front of the camera. I am guessing they are stage actresses, maybe vaudeville or burlesque? What also intrigues me is the false femininity they display, a slight coyness mixed with come-hither type of looks.

I came across these late depression era color photos a while back. It’s amazing the impact a color photo has. I knew this intrinsically, but not ever having seen a color photo from this time period, I was shocked at how powerful these were to me:
